Frustrated with the Remove Tool

Today’s Question

When I use the Remove tool in Lightroom Classic and select Heal, then switch to Clone, the existing cleanup area changes from Heal to Clone. How can I use Heal and then switch to Clone without altering the previous action?

Mark’s Answer

To avoid changing the Mode setting for existing cleanup areas when using the Remove tool in Lightroom Classic (or Camera Raw or Lightroom), press the Escape (Esc) key on your keyboard to ensure no cleanup area is selected before making any changes.

In Lightroom Classic (or Camera Raw or Lightroom), you can change the Mode setting for a selected cleanup area using the Remove tool. For example, if you used the Clone option but it isn’t providing good results, you can switch the Mode to Heal or Remove instead.

However, if you want to change the Mode for the next cleanup area rather than the current one, this can be frustrating. To ensure no cleanup area is active before changing the Mode setting, press the Escape (Esc) key on your keyboard. This allows you to change the setting before starting a new cleanup area.

You can also paint a new cleanup area, which will inherit the Mode setting from the previously selected area. You can then change the Mode for the new cleanup area after creating it. But if you prefer to change the Mode first, press the Escape key before creating the new area.
