Today’s Question
With a high-resolution camera, would you recommend using the embedded preview option in Lightroom Classic instead of generating Standard previews during import?
Mark’s Answer
Overall, I still recommend using the Standard (or 1:1) preview option in Lightroom rather than relying on the embedded previews included in proprietary raw files.

Choosing to use embedded previews during import rather than generating Standard (or 1:1) previews can speed up your workflow slightly, as the embedded previews are already available, eliminating the need for Lightroom to generate new ones.
However, embedded previews won’t necessarily match Lightroom’s interpretation of the photos, as they’re generated by the camera rather than Lightroom. They also won’t reflect any Lightroom adjustments, such as Develop module presets applied during import. For example, I apply profile-based lens corrections on import, so all photos have that correction by default—something the embedded preview wouldn’t reflect.
On balance, I still prefer to have Lightroom generate Standard previews during import. It adds a bit of time to the process, but I find it worthwhile.
